Meet Isabella and Sophia, twins with alopecia areata, who have graciously agreed to this interview under pseudonyms to maintain their privacy.
Question (Q): At what age did you start noticing hair loss, and did it begin simultaneously for both of you?
Answer (A): Sophia began experiencing hair loss at age six, and I, Isabella, started a year later. Once Sophia's bald spots appeared, our mother took us to the doctor, even though I hadn't shown any symptoms at that time.
Q: So, Sophia, you were diagnosed at six, and later Isabella. Did you both start using wigs immediately?
A: Initially, we didn't use wigs. Instead, we wore scarves and hats – our mom had a knack for choosing beautiful, floral hats. We enjoyed a pretty normal childhood and weren't teased much until high school.
Q: What changed in high school?
A: The hats weren't as effective anymore, and we mostly wore scarves. This led some to assume we were ill, which made making friends challenging. A particularly tough moment occurred when Isabella’s scarf fell off during a gym class, leading to stares and laughter from some classmates. This incident was a turning point for us, leading to periods of skipping school. We hid any school communication about our absences, but eventually, our parents found out, leading to consequences and a we had to go back to school.
Q: Would you say your teenage years were challenging?
A: Definitely. Things improved after our mom explained our condition to the school, clarifying that alopecia is not contagious and we are normal kids. This opened up more social interactions and questions from people, eventually leading to friendships.

Q: When did you begin wearing wigs?
A: Our first wigs were quite itchy, I think they were synthetic, and we found them uncomfortable, taking them off any chance we could in the bathroom. We continued preferring scarves until lace wigs gained popularity for their natural appearance. We switched to them but encountered issues with the glue causing skin irritation. We tried using a band, which helped. After receiving your wigs as graduation presents was life changing. I am now happily engaged, and Sophia is married. The confidence boost we got from wearing your wigs made a difference on our lives.
Q: That's fantastic news. Congratulations!
A: Thank you. Your wigs have been transformative for us – they look and feel incredible, perhaps even better than natural hair would. We're grateful, especially since now our insurance covered the cost of our wigs. It's a gift that keeps on giving.
Q: Thank you for your kind words.
A: No, thank you for making a difference in our lives.
You are welcome.Thank you for opening up about your journey.
