🔆The Birth of Hairline Illusions: ✨ How Did It All Start? 💛

Updated: Jun 13, 2023

Hairline Illusions emerged from the vibrant energy of Gérard Duré New York, a star-studded salon where Egypt Lawson not only managed but also ascended to partnership.

Gérard Duré, the maven behind this iconic establishment, adorned the locks of countless celebrities like Queen Latifah, Lil' Kim, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Tyra Banks and many more. This salon was the happening spot, where celebrities flocked to sip champagne, belt out karaoke tunes, and revel in the magic. With a team of up to ten talented stylists, we catered to the needs of our beloved clients, serving them with flair and finesse.

But we were more than just a salon. We had a special focus on those facing hair loss and unique circumstances. In those days, lace frontals weren't readily available, so we took matters into our own hands, crafting custom frontals of different sizes and skillfully weaving them into the hair. It didn't take long for celebrity stylists to take notice, entrusting us with the task of creating frontals for their esteemed clientele. And that's how Hairline Illusions carved its place in history.

Then came a client with a heartfelt request. She, along with her sibling, needed their hair cut to create wigs as she prepared for chemotherapy treatments. Although making full wigs was uncharted territory for Egypt, she embraced the challenge and sought out wig-making courses, although they were scarce in the late '90s, early 2000's to learn the craft. Through these courses, she honed her skills in crafting lace foundations and mastering the art of ventilating. Egypt even gleaned invaluable tips from a renowned Toupee factory named WAJ, nestled in the vibrant streets of Harlem. When she completed the wig for her client, Egypt gifted it to her as a symbol of compassion, free of charge. The joy in her client's eyes was immeasurable, and her enthusiasm led to six more referrals for wig services. That's when the true essence of Hairline Illusions came to life.

Later, when Gérard Duré New York temporarily closed its doors for construction, Egypt embarked on a journey overseas. Her quest was to immerse herself in the art of wig making, learning from different factories across the globe. Returning to the bustling streets of New York, Egypt devoted herself wholeheartedly to wig production, enlisting the help of three skilled builders.

As the popularity of wigs soared, so did the Hairline Illusions family. By 2008, we had gathered a team of at least 150 talented individuals. However, the storm clouds of the Global Financial Crisis threatened to darken our doors, jeopardizing our future. Orders dwindled, and financial strains loomed large, making it difficult to cover salaries. But the spirit of unity and resilience within our staff was unyielding. We were more than colleagues; we were a tight-knit family. Determined not to let Hairline Illusions falter, we banded together, agreeing to work independently until brighter days arrived.

And brighter days did come. We weathered the storm, emerging from the crisis with renewed vigor. It was a testament to the resilience and determination of our team. The staff, who were more like family than colleagues, stood united in their unwavering support for Hairline Illusions. They selflessly agreed to work independently during those challenging times, determined to keep our doors open and our mission alive.

In the redesign creation of Hairline Illusions' logo, Egypt embarked on a purposeful journey to convey profound meaning. With a remarkable fusion of symbols, the logo radiates the regality of a queen's crown and the brilliance of the sun. It embodies the vision to illuminate and elevate the lives of women.

With meticulous intention, Egypt sought to communicate a message of empowerment and inner radiance. The queen's crown, a symbol of strength and majesty, reflects the innate power and dignity possessed by every woman. It serves as a reminder that within each of us lies the potential to embrace our true essence and shine brightly.

As the tides began to turn, our efforts bore fruit. We were featured in VOGUE magazine with a 12 page spread. We started seeing signs of recovery and a resurgence of interest in our unique and realistic hair alternatives. The trust and loyalty of our valued customers propelled us forward, and we emerged from the darkness stronger than ever before.
