What's Needed for DNA Testing?
One of the most common questions we get is, "What do I need to provide for a DNA test?" The good news is, it's much simpler than you might think! Here's a breakdown of the most common sample types used in DNA testing:
Hair: Contrary to popular belief, we generally don't use hair samples for DNA testing. While hair does contain DNA, it's primarily in the root, which isn't typically present in shed hairs. The hair shaft itself doesn't contain nuclear DNA, which is what most tests analyze.
Cheek Swab: This is the most common and easiest method. A simple, painless swab of the inside of your cheek is all that's needed. It's quick, non-invasive, and can be done right here in our facility.
Saliva Sample: Some tests may require a small saliva sample. This is also a simple, non-invasive method.
Blood Sample: While less common for standard tests, some specialized DNA tests might require a small blood sample. This is typically only necessary for certain medical genetic tests.
Other Samples: In rare cases, other sample types might be used, such as skin cells or nail clippings. However, these are not common and are typically only used in forensic settings.
For most of our DNA tests at HIASTI, including paternity, relationship, and ancestry tests, a simple cheek swab is all that's required. The process is quick, painless, and can be completed in just a few minutes at our facility.
What Is Needed for DNA Testing:
1. DNA Sample:
- The most common samples are buccal (cheek) swabs, but HIASTI also accepts hair samples (with the follicle/root intact), blood, and other forensic samples depending on the type of test.
- For hair DNA testing specifically, at least 5-10 hairs with roots are needed for accurate analysis. The root is where the DNA is located.
2. Identification (If Required for Legal Testing):
- For legal DNA tests, identification documents such as a government-issued ID (passport, driver’s license, or birth certificate) may be required to verify the identity of the person providing the sample.
3. Consent:
- Consent is necessary for all parties being tested, especially in legal or paternity cases. In the case of minors, the legal guardian must provide consent.
4. Case-Specific Information:
- Depending on the purpose of the test (paternity, relationship, forensic, etc.), certain forms and additional details (e.g., relationship to the tested party) will need to be filled out.
HIASTI Collection Process:
1. Order a Test:
- Clients must contact HIASTI to order the appropriate DNA test, whether it’s for paternity, relationship verification, ancestry, or other purposes. The test can be ordered online, by phone, or in-person at an authorized location.
2. Sample Collection:
- At-Home Collection (Non-Legal):
- HIASTI sends a DNA collection kit with instructions.
- For a buccal swab: You will receive sterile swabs that are rubbed on the inside of the cheek for 20-30 seconds to collect cells.
- For hair samples: Collect 5-10 strands of hair with roots intact by gently pulling from the scalp. The hair is then placed in a sterile envelope provided in the kit.
- The samples are then packaged according to instructions and sent back to HIASTI in a pre-paid envelope.
- In-Person Collection (Legal Testing):
- For legal testing, samples must be collected by an authorized professional. HIASTI has collection sites or can arrange for a professional to come to your home or office.
- The collector verifies the identity of each person, takes the sample (usually buccal swabs), and submits it to HIASTI.
3. Submission:
- The collected samples are packaged and shipped to HIASTI’s laboratory for analysis.
4. Laboratory Analysis:
- Once the samples are received, the laboratory processes and analyzes the DNA for the specific test requested. Hair samples require additional handling since the DNA must be extracted from the hair follicles.
5. Results:
- Results are typically available within 3-5 business days for standard paternity or relationship tests. The results can be sent via email or through the HIASTI online portal. For legal tests, official documentation is provided.
