The Art of Crafting Dreadlocks: From Natural Styles to Custom Prostheses

Dreadlocks, a hairstyle steeped in cultural significance, have gained worldwide popularity. This article explores various dreadlock styles, their creation processes, and the intricate art of crafting dreadlock wigs and toppers.

Types of Dreadlocks

  1. Sister Locks Invented by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell in 1993, Sister Locks are ultra-thin dreadlocks about the thickness of a pencil lead. They are considered the smallest micro locks, similar to but distinct from interlocking.

  2. Interlocked Dreadlocks Created using a latch hook in a four-point rotation (down to up, left to right, up to down, right to left). Each lock takes about 30 minutes to create, depending on the desired hair length.

  3. Traditional Pencil-Sized Dreadlocks Formed through palm rolling, linking, twisting, and/or backcombing. Creating a single, authentic-looking 12" pencil-sized dreadlock takes approximately 1 hour, mimicking a decade of natural growth and locking.

  4. Freedom Locs (Freeform) These mimic minimally manipulated, thicker dreadlocks. While thicker, they require similar creation time to traditional dreadlocks when done properly.

  5. Soft Backcomb Dreadlocks A gentler backcombing technique resulting in a softer dreadlock. This is the quickest method, with 12" soft pencil-sized dreadlocks taking about 15 minutes each.

  6. Two-strand Twists: Although not technically dreadlocks, are a popular choice among our clients who are new to dreadlocks or transitioning out of them. This versatile protective style serves as an excellent foundation for those considering dreadlocks, offering a neat and defined appearance while allowing the hair to naturally lock over time if desired. It's particularly appealing to those seeking a more gradual transition or a style that can be easily undone. This version reflects the nuanced role of two-strand twists in relation to dreadlocks, highlighting their versatility and appeal to a specific client base. It also maintains the key points about the style's potential to evolve into dreadlocks while emphasizing that they are distinct hairstyles.

Dreadlock Wigs and Toppers: A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship

For those seeking the dreadlock aesthetic without permanent commitment, wigs and toppers offer a versatile solution. Their creation is an intricate, time-consuming process:

Hair Count: 75,000 to 150,000 individual strands per piece Creation Time: 35 to 400 hours, depending on various factors.

Essential Considerations in Bespoke Dreadlock Production

  • Cap construction (prosthesis, lace front, full lace)

  • Dreadlock density and pattern intricacy

  • Length and thickness of dreadlocks

  • Desired level of authenticity

The Creation Process:

  1. Consultation: Scalp blueprinting, scanning, molding, and skin pigment matching

  2. Head Bust Creation: Replicating exact skull and scalp contours

  3. Cap Preparation: Membrane cloning and color matching to the client's scalp

  4. Hair Attachment: Meticulous implantation of individual hairs, mimicking natural growth patterns

  5. Dreadlock Formation: Crafting each section into a dreadlock

  6. Styling: Arranging completed dreadlocks as desired

Maintenance and Care:

  • Gentle washing with appropriate products

  • Careful drying to prevent mildew

  • Periodic restyling or tightening

  • Proper storage when not in use
